The first thing need to be done is defraging your hard drive.

In XP: Click the start button->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->Disk Defragmenter

You can analyze first by clicking analyze or just defrag.

Another thing you can do is to clean up your hard drive and remove any unwanted or unused files to allow your machine to have more virtual memory space.

Perform regular antivirus scans to remove spywares or adwares that may be slowing down your pc.
